1. Who is BHI?
Build Hope, Inc (BHI), was created under the name Kids Progress Inc. (KPI) in 2002 by the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), to ensure that residents living in the city’s public housing developments receive the full social, health, educational and work opportunities to which they are entitled, and to enhance quality of life, through long-term academic and economic success. In 2019, the non-profit changed its name to Build Hope, Inc. and expanded its area of work to encompass not just the residents of public housing but of the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles’ growing portfolio of properties, the communities connected to our residents and our Section 8 households. BHI is dedicated to improving life outcomes and addressing intergenerational poverty.

2. Is BHI a public agency?
No, BHI is 501(c)(3) Corporation, a nonprofit public benefit corporation without capital stock and without members. BHI is not organized for the private gain of any person. It is organized under the Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law for public and charitable purposes. The Corporation is governed by Parts 1 and 2 of Division 2 of Title 1 of the California Corporations Code. All donations to BHI are fully tax-deductible.

3. What is the relationship between BHI and HACLA?
HACLA holds a majority of seats on BHI’s Board of Directors but the organizations are separately missioned.
While BHI provides resources and other supports to HACLA residents, clients and program participants, as an independent 501(c)(3) Corporation, HACLA’s mission is to focus on the construction, acquisition, and management of affordable housing developments and provision of affordable housing options through vouchers. BHI is responsible for its own financing and operations independent of HACLA.

4. Who manages BHI?

5. Does BHI service exclusively the City of Los Angeles? Does BHI have any national or international affiliation?
BHI works exclusively within the boundaries of the City of Los Angeles. Although Los Angeles-based, BHI is committed to developing cross collaborative opportunities with partners beyond our immediate borders. Interested in learning more, please contact us.

6. Who does BHI support?
BHI targets its services and resource coordination to close to 11,000 units of housing owned by HACLA including 14 large public housing sites. BHI also coordinates resources and services to HACLA’s Section 8 clients and the communities of extended family and neighbors that surround our properties .Approximately 28% of residents are between the ages of 0 to 17. Only a third of residents have a high school diploma or further education. The average family income is at or below the poverty line. 8. What ways can I give to BHI?
BHI Offers several ways to give including:

  • Corporate Giving – We welcome inquiries from companies that support our mission
  • Matching Gifts – Check with your company to see if a matching gift program exists. This is a great way to multiply your contribution.
  • Amazon Smile – When purchasing from Amazon, simply start your shopping at smile.amazon.com. When you designate Build Hope Inc as your charitable recipient, .05% of the price of your eligible Amazon Smile purchases will be donated to our mission.
  • In-Kind Donations – In Kind donations are very important to our mission. Individuals and companies provide valuable resources that can alter the lives of our residents.
  • Peer to Peer / Event Fundraising – We encourage you to support our mission by engaging your own community through individual efforts. Examples include golf tournaments, runs, and other group events.

9. 
Does BHI accept Endowment Giving? Can I create an endowment fund with a gift through my estate plan? Who should I talk to?
Yes! We invite giving through a will or a living trust. You can name Build Hope Inc as a beneficiary in your will/estate for a specific amount or percentage or designate BHI as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy. (BHI must be named as the owner or beneficiary of the insurance policy for it to be tax-deductible.) BHI highly recommends consulting a legal professional in the development of an endowment fund and we are happy to support such inquiries here

10. What volunteer opportunities does BHI offer?
BHI relies off the support of volunteers to carry out our mission. We host food drives, volunteer events, and more. If you or your company is interested in our volunteer opportunities send us a message here

11. I’m a resident of the Housing Authority of the City Of Los Angeles and I’ve never heard of Build Hope Inc or the services they provide to me.
